DON’T FORGET TO PINCH THOSE BARBS, PLEASE PRACTICE CATCH & RELEASE ONLY! AFTER THE APRIL 29TH ALL CREEKS RIVERS ARE OPEN EXCEPT TRIBUTARIES THAT FEED TAHOE!! THEY WILL OPEN JULY 1ST.
NOTE FOR THE WEEK: VERY BUSY THIS WEEK SO BE PATIENT WITH YOUR FELLOW ANGLERS! Wintery weather with snow on the ground Monday, but it will be in the low 80’s by the weekend! With those temps by the weekend we will see the official run-off season begin, so expect flows to go up! River is flowing good, water clarity is a bit on the cloudy side, and fish are willing to bite on well-presented offerings. Late spring fishing can be pretty productive given the scenario and some really big trout are caught during this time of the year.
TRUCKEE RIVER: Trout Creek to Stateline barbless Flies and lures only. NO BAIT! NO SCENTED LURES! CATCH & RELEASE ONLY PLEASE!!! 1000 FT BELOW TAHOE CITY TO TROUT CREEK IS OPEN AND IS UNDER GENERAL REGULATIONS!
Flows: Tahoe City 1610! CFS Truckee (ABOVE DONNER CREEK) 1950 CFS, Below Martis Creek (Glenshire) 2360 CFS! Below Prosser Creek 2518 CFS, Boca 2990 CFS, Farad 3450 CFS-water temps: 44-47.
BIG TRUCKEE: FLOWS HAVE COME UP OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS! With the current flows being high one will still be fishing the softer water closer to the bank, with flow to it, as trout will not be fighting the higher flows found in the middle of the river. Trout this time of year, and in the situation we’re in, can be found in some shallow water just to avoid the flow and use as little energy as possible! Get proficient with your streamer techniques because the payoff could be one of the elusive big browns that reside in the T. From Boca, downstream to Stateline, flows are pretty high and this is where most are concentrating their efforts just because parking can be found. It’s not often that Streamers fishing is better than the nymph rigs but it’s that time of year! Don't discount Crayfish patterns as these can be effective, they’re easy target for large trout and are often overlooked with traditional streamers! 3x and 4x for streamer rigs, leaning more towards the 3x. If the streamer gig isn’t your thing don’t worry as there are still plenty of trout being caught on nymph rigs. Stones, BWO’s, Baetis, PMD’S, March Browns and Midges are all present on the Trout’s diet this time of year. For the purist, one can sit on the banks and wait for some nice fish to rise to BWO’s and Baetis dries along the shoulders of deep pools or slowly drying their wings further out in pools with some flow. On another note let’s all remember proper ethics and C&R techniques as temps have dropped. Let’s not play trout to exhaustion and handle minimally or not at all. Remember, there will be days where you'll do great and the next you'll get your you know what handed to you, it's the Truckee. To learn the river exponentially, hire one of our local guides. It's worth the money if you fish this occasionally or want to learn it's secrets! Great list of local guides on bottom of page.
LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: NO BAIT!!! NO SCENTED LURES!!! PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ANGLERS AND THEIR SPACE! PLEASE DON’T FISH ONE SPOT FOR TO LONG. CATCH & RELEASE ONLY PLEASE!!!
Flows: 531 CFS! Great Flows! Be prepared, as the onslaught of summer crowds are descending on this fishery now!
LITTLE TRUCKEE: With FLOWS GOING UP this week look for softer water where fish don’t have to fight the river flow too much! If you must drop a line here I would think more about using 4x to keep fish from running into the fast water and breaking off. Access is wide open here now and fish will be found everywhere throughout the system. Trout here will be feeding on a steady diet of Midges and BWO/Baetis, so have all stages of these bugs in your box. The rule of thumb here has been 3x-5x depending on the situation. Fall backs to use are San Juan Worms when nothing else seems to work. Hint: the bigger fish in this system prefer emergers over adults most the time, so learn how to fish emergers effectively.
