Gallatin River
291 CFS @ Gateway- The Gallatin has been fishing very well through the canyon to Big Sky. Fish will be sitting in deeper pools and riffles until the water temperature rises. Nymphing will be the most effective method using a worm and midge, or small stone, look for rising fish on warmer days. Fishing in the valley has been hit or miss.
Recommended Flies:
San Juan Worm #12-14
BH Prince Nymph #14-16
Midge #16-18
Black Bugger #2-4
Griffiths Knat #18-20
Lower Madison River
1550 CFS @ Ennis- The fishing below Ennis dam through Bear Trap canyon has been very productive with nymph rigs using worm and egg variations. On warmer overcast days look for fish rising in the slower deep runs. You can also try dead drifting any Sculpin or small minnow imitations in deeper runs for bigger fish.
Recommended Flies:
Wire Worm #6
Ray Charles #16-18
Glo-Bug #10-12
Skulpzilla #4
Red Copper John #16
Upper Madison River
1080 CFS @ Kirby - With the recent mild temps in the afternoons, the Upper Madison has fished good up around the Raynolds Pass area and just below the Dam. Nymping has been best but the occasional fish can be seen midging on the surface on the cloudy days. San Juans, midge pupas and small stone nymphs have worked best.
Recommended Flies:
Zebra Midge #18
Jim Dandy Worm #10
3Dollar Dip #16
Shop Vac #16
Rubberlegs #10
Yellowstone River
1060 CFS @ Corwin - They Yellowstone River may not be your best bet right now, but if you can get to it (lots of ice) you can catch a few fish in the afternoons. Its been much colder downstream from Livingston for the past few weeks so your better fishing will most certainly be upstream. Nyphing in the side pools and slower water is best.
Recommended Flies:
Zebra Midge #18
Shop Vac #16
Golden Stone #12
Griffiths Gnat #18
Czech Nymph #16
Missouri River
4240 CFS @ Holter - The Missouri River has been a good option lately if you are up to the drive. The fishing has been best above Craig as its a bit frosty downstream. If you float, check the boat ramps for ice before you launch. Nymphing the little stuff will be best in the slower pools until things warm up a bit more.
Recommended Flies:
Pink Pierre #16
Rainbow Czech #16
Zebra Midge #18
SJ Worm #10
Griffiths Gnat #18
Spring Creeks
With the half price rates and the option of a warming hut, the spring creek of choice right now is DePuys. The creek has plenty of fish in it right now, but they certainly move around during this time of the year so if you're not catching much, don't be afraid to move up or downstream. Nymphing small midges and scuds has been best.
Recommended Flies:
Tungsten Zebra Midge #18
Jim Dandy Worm #10
Pink Pierre #16
Poison Tung #18
Hi-Viz Midge #20
