Kiene's American Fly Fishing Co. Fishing report

kiene's american river fly fishing report

LOWER SACRAMENTO RIVER

Current River Conditions: Flows are at around 10,500 CFS which is perfect for floating the Lower Sac.

River is fishing very well and with warmer temperatures more insects are coming daily including some PMDs, but mainly BWOs and Caddis.  Caddis is the most important bug right now.  Pupa and larva patterns will do the trick.  Try a size #14 Bird's nest and you might be surprised as the fish will take it for both a Caddis pupa and a large mayfly nymph-you get two bangs for your buck!

It's important to get your fly down to the bottom so use enough weight.  Try swinging size #14 soft hackles in the riffles during hatches.  Stonefly nymps both Golden or Rubberlegs make a good anchor fly in a two fly nymph rig.  Tie in a size #16 beadhead/flashback PT below.

There is not a lot of dry fly action but keep your eyes open for rises later in the day and throw an Elk Hair Caddis at them.

Recomended Patterns

Bead Head Pheasant Tail #12, #14 & #16, San Juan Worm/passionate pink, Bead Head Golden Stone Nymph #8,, #10, & #12, Copper John/red or copper #14, #16, Bead Head Prince Nymph (various sizes), Wooly Bugger/rusty, black, Glow Bug/red.

tungston bead Zebra Midge/black, brown, red, Fox's Poopah #14 & #16. Scud/pink #14.  Fox's Poopah #14

Stimulator #8-#12, Adams Parachute #14 & #16, Elk Hair Caddis #14 & #16

LOWER YUBA RIVER

Current River Conditions: Flows remain around the 2,000 CFS range which has improved access to good holding water.

We received a good reports this week from fishermen taking a walk above the bridge.  They did best swing streamers through the fast water into the seams where the fish were holding.    Reports are that the river has changed tremendously since above the bridge.

Below Daguerra Point Dam its all about Stripers and Shad with the fishing rated as good.  This is a great year for Shad though things have slowed down a little.  Best Striper fishing is just upstream from Marysville.

Recomended Patterns

LOWER AMERICAN RIVER

Current River Conditions: Flows are are holding steady at around 3500 CFS and many of  the traditional runs are becoming wadeable.

Shad fishing is winding down though boat bound anglers  and some of the shore anglers throwing two handed rigs are catching a few.   Best action is upstream from Gristmill.

Striper action is still very good and they are now throughout the river. We're hearing good reports from downstream of the island at Sailor Bar.

Our guides at the shop are on the AR every day, so stop by and pick their brains or maybe let them take you out and get you into some fish.

Recomended Flies

Shad: Bloody Maria, American River Pinky

Bass: Clouser Minnows/all color combinations but chartreuse and white seem to never fail

PUTAH CREEK

Current River Conditions: Flows are running about 600 CFS with a green tint, making the creek difficult to wade.  Best to wait until September when flows drop.

If you are careful,  you can fish the edges of the creek with midge larval patterns suspended under an indicator and get some nice fish.
