SACRAMENTO — Trolling spinners as well as lures behind flashers is leading to chrome-bright kings in the Sacramento metro area, as big numbers of salmon make their way upstream.

GARCIA BENDAREA is full of kings as they stream through the Sac. Metro area, and Dan Vasquez of Antioch caught this bright Sacramento River king Sept. 30 while on a guided fishing trip with captain Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing. He used Brads cut plugs and pro troll flashers.

“The action has been good,” said guide Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing. “I think it is right in the middle of the run. I don’t know if it has peaked yet or not. I think we still have quite a ways to go.”

Smith got customers into numerous kings last week between Miller Park and Garcia Bend on Brad’s Plug Cut lures combined with Pro Troll flashers. The majority of the fish are chrome-bright kings, Smith said. “I haven’t run across too many dark ones yet,” he said.

Guide James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service also has been getting customers into chrome-bright fish. Netzel is trolling the Pro Troll flashers with Brad’s Cut Plug baits with tuna. Last week, he got customers into limits and near limits of brand new fish making their way up the Sacramento.

Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle said bank anglers have been catching salmon on spinners at Discovery Park, Miller Park and the Minnow Hole. Mepps Flying C spinners have been working well.

Boaters also are catching fish jigging at the Minnow Hole, or trolling from Miller Park to Garcia Bend, Barnes said.
