Big Bear Lake Seeing Great Weather, Slightly Erratic Trouting

Published: Feb 09, 2018
BIG BEAR LAKE — Mild early-February weather is making it feel a whole lot like springtime at Big Bear Lake and with more nice days ahead in the 10-day forecast, it’s making for a great time to wet a line. Even though the trout bite has been a little spotty in recent days, anglers are still plucking out some chunky rainbows to 5½ pounds and enjoying the mild conditions.

BIG BEAR ANGLERS are still finding some quality rainbows despite a bit of an erratic recent bite, like this one hauled in by Kelly Wexler.

“The trout were a bit erratic this last week,” reported Steve Raphael at Big Bear Sporting Goods. “The north shore is still the location of choice but further east than the dam or the Red House. PowerBait, Mice Tails, nightcrawlers and garlic marshmallows on 1- to 2-foot leaders are all working.” Raphael said the most recent bites are coming 30 to 40 feet off the banks, and that the stretch of shoreline from the West Launch Ramp to Juniper Point is producing pretty well of late.

The best trout action has been in the first few hours of the morning, with fewer catches being made in the afternoons and evenings. For the latest on the bite and conditions at the lake, contact Big Bear Sporting Goods at (909) 866-3222.
